WDW395H1 Independent Study
Independent study under the direction of an Employment Relations faculty member. It is the responsibility of the student to propose an independent study topic, and obtain the agreement of an instructor who is willing to supervise the project.
Prerequisite: WDW244H1, 260H1 and 1.0 WDW300 level Employment Relations full course equivalent (FCE). 
A CGPA of at least 2.5.
Approval of the Undergraduate Coordinator is required.

WDW396H1/397Y1 Research Participation
Credit course for supervised participation in a faculty research project. Offered only when a faculty member is willing and available to supervise. Available to students only upon invitation by a faculty member. Open only to third and fourth year students enrolled in an Employment Relations program.
Prerequisites: Nine FCEs.  A CGPA of at least 3.0 is recommended.
Approval of the Undergraduate Coordinator is required.

WDW494H1Y Advanced ER Topics (Summer 2013 Session)
This course introduces students to emerging trends in international policy in key labour and human resource issues. It begins with an historical overview of international labour regulation over the last century, followed by a quick lead-up to the current era of globalization in the post-1980 time period. Students will learn about labour and human resource policies of employers, unions and governments in the post-globalization era and the inadequacies of national regulation to deal with emerging problems. The evolution of international regulation will be treated through various lenses of employer needs for skilled labour, union needs for worker protection and government priorities for economic growth and job creation. Students will learn about the role of various institutions including the ILO, in mobilization and regulation of labour and human resources.
 

Minimum requirements: 
Entering year 4 in September 2013 or graduating in November, 2013.
At least 13 FCEs  including WDW244H1, WDW260H1, 1.0 WDW300 FCE in Employment Relations and  a 3.0 cgpa (B average)
 This  course will count towards the ER/ program requirements.

Course Fees & Expenses
Students are responsible for the following expenses:

  • Tuition Fee (Arts and Science, CHRM students please check the Fees website.)
  • Special course fee: $1,500 (includes shared accommodation, two per room, a local transit pass and two dinners)
  • A non-refundable deposit of $500 is required by March 28.
  • Airfare to and from Geneva; students are to arrange their own tickets
  • Ground transportation to and from the airport to the hotel
  • Medical and travel insurance
  • Meals that are not included in the course fee
  • Personal miscellaneous expenses

The Centre will provide information to help students estimate these expenses.
 
Financial Assistance:

Interested students must apply for a bursary by filling out the Summer Abroad Award Application.
The application does not list Geneva as a destination so students will need to write it in by hand.  The bursaries will be distributed on the basis of both academic merit and financial need.

Applications should be submitted to the Summer Abroad office, third floor, Woodsworth College.
This new course will be offered at the CIRHR during June-July, 2013, subject to sufficient enrollment.

Schedule
Toronto: The course will meet from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 4 – 25 in the CIRHR classroom.
It will be taught by Anil Verma and adjunct professor, Jeffrey Sack .
Geneva: The course will meet from 9:00 to 12:00 from Monday July 8 through Friday July 12 with guest speakers from the ILO. In the afternoon students will work on their class projects and meet with various representatives from the ILO.
