Alumni Association of Woodsworth College: How to get involved

One of the best ways of staying involved in your college is by becoming a board member of the Alumni Association of Woodsworth College.

The Board of the Alumni Association of Woodsworth College is made up of ten director at large and five executive positions.  Currently, there are five honorary directors.  These individuals have been recognized for their exemplary service to the College and the AAWC.

Members of the board are elected at the annual general meeting of the Alumni Association, held in May.  The board meets once a month during the academic year.  It follows its strategic plan and operates under its mission statement which states that the AAWC will “encourage a rewarding lifelong relationship between Woodsworth College alumni and the College, as well as uniting our alumni in support of the College’s academic, financial and social objectives, fostering alumni participation in the governance of the College and to promote the best interests of the College, the students, the alumni and the University community.”

All alumni of the College are eligible to sit on the Board of Directors.  It is a wonderful way to network, make friends, acquire new skills and stay connected to Woodsworth and the University of Toronto!

Here are some of the highlights of the AAWC’s work:

Events: The board organizes educational events for both alumni and students such as etiquette, networking and career development seminars.  Other events include special lecturers, wine tastings, student BBQ’s, and speakers.

Governance:  The AAWC board is involved in issues of governance at the College.  Members of the board sit on the following committees: College Council, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, as well as special ad hoc committees such as principals’ search committees.  The AAWC board also appoints two members each year to sit on the University of Toronto’s College of Electors, a body which elects the University of Toronto Chancellor as well as alumni governors for seats on Governing Council.

Building relationships with students:  The AAWC stays involved with student activities at the college.  AAWC volunteers help during the first week of classes to help orient students, sit on the Woodsworth College Students’ Association board, run events for students such as the Mature Students Annual BBQ.

Mentorship:  the AAWC supports the College's mentorship activities and promotes individuals coming forward to share their experiences with the students either one-to-one or in a group session.
